Analysis & Approaches — Standard Level
For students studying a more analytical approach to mathematics, with emphasis on algebra, functions and calculus.
-
Algebra, functions & trigonometry
Build a strong foundation in the core analytical topics.
-
Calculus
Understand the concepts and apply them with confidence.
-
Problem solving
Unfamiliar, multi-step questions approached with confidence.
-
Paper 1 & 2 preparation
Timed practice on the non-calculator and calculator papers, with feedback on where marks go.
-
Internal Assessment guidance
Support with topic choice, investigation and written report.
Analysis & Approaches — Higher Level
For students taking mathematically demanding courses and developing deeper analytical and problem-solving skills.
-
Advanced algebra & functions
Work with more complex expressions and models.
-
Advanced calculus
Deeper understanding of calculus and its applications.
-
Proof & problem solving
Formal proof and unfamiliar, multi-step questions.
-
Paper 1, 2 & 3 preparation
Timed practice on all three papers, including Paper 3's extended problems, with feedback on where marks go.
-
Internal Assessment guidance
Support with topic choice, investigation and written report.
Applications & Interpretation — Standard Level
For students applying mathematics to practical contexts, with greater emphasis on modelling, statistics and technology.
-
Statistics & probability
Explore data, probability and statistical methods.
-
Mathematical modelling
Apply mathematics to real-life problems and practical situations.
-
Calculator & technology skills
Use technology efficiently to explore and solve problems.
-
Paper 1 & 2 preparation
Timed practice on both papers, with feedback on where marks go.
-
Internal Assessment guidance
Support with topic choice, investigation and written report.
Applications & Interpretation — Higher Level
For students working with more advanced modelling, statistics and technology-based mathematical problems.
-
Advanced statistics & probability
Work with distributions and methods of inference.
-
Modelling & calculus
Differential equations and advanced models in applied contexts.
-
Calculator & technology skills
Use technology efficiently to explore and solve problems.
-
Paper 1, 2 & 3 preparation
Timed practice on all three papers, including Paper 3's extended problems, with feedback on where marks go.
-
Internal Assessment guidance
Support with topic choice, investigation and written report.
How I teach
-
Understanding before procedures
Why a method works, not only the steps. -
Clear explanations
Ideas broken down until they make sense. -
Feedback on every attempt
Specific enough that the same mistake does not come back. -
Independent thinking
Learning to start an unfamiliar problem without a template. -
Confidence
Built on understanding, so it holds up in the exam.
IB Mathematics Internal Assessment support
- 1
Topic choice
Genuine interest, and enough mathematics to sustain it.
- 2
Mathematical development
Correct mathematics at the right level, with a clear argument.
- 3
Draft feedback
Specific feedback against the current criteria.
I guide, question and check. I do not write, rewrite or edit the exploration.
When to start
-
Easiest
First term of the Diploma
Where the gap from IGCSE opens up, with time to close it.
-
Still comfortable
Before the Internal Assessment
Room to choose a workable topic and plan the exploration.
-
Narrow but useful
Final term
Past papers, highest-yield topics, the habits costing marks.
Common questions
What is the difference between IB Mathematics AA and AI?
Analysis & Approaches is the algebraic route: functions, calculus and, at Higher Level, formal proof, with more of the work done by hand. Applications & Interpretation is the modelling route: statistics, real-world data and deliberate use of technology. Neither is the easy option. Where a degree course is already in view, its entry requirement should decide, since some courses name AA at Higher Level.
Should my child take Standard Level or Higher Level?
Higher Level covers more content in greater depth and adds a third paper. University plans matter as much as current ability, since many degree courses specify HL Mathematics. I can give an honest view of where your child sits.
How do you help students move from IGCSE to IB Mathematics?
The transition is not simply about learning more mathematics. IB expects students to connect ideas, work more independently and apply mathematics to unfamiliar problems. I can identify gaps in the IGCSE foundations and help build the skills needed for the IB course.
What language are lessons in?
English. The exam is in English, so the mathematical vocabulary matters as much as the methods. Conversations with parents can be in German, French, Ukrainian or Russian.
Do you teach online or in person?
Both. In person at my place in Kreuzberg, online elsewhere in Europe. Past papers and Internal Assessment drafts both work well on screen, annotated together.
How much do lessons cost?
€50 for 60 minutes, €75 for 90, in a fixed weekly slot invoiced monthly in advance. Two students on the same course can share a lesson for €35 each (€50 each for 90 minutes). The first 30-minute session is free, with no commitment, and there is no minimum term. A lesson cancelled at least 24 hours ahead can be made up, one per month.

What parents & students say
-
Kateryna helped our daughter prepare for her IGCSE math mocks. She was struggling with a few topics and had lost confidence, but after working with Kateryna for about two months the improvement was clear. She went into the exam feeling much more prepared and the result reflected that.
